A Steversified View of The Kybalion – Part III—The Principles of Correspondence and Cause & Effect
Kybalion
What are the Principles of Correspondence and Cause & Effect? How can learning the Principle of Correspondence and the Principle of Cause & Effect help you to master The Kybalion and improve your life?
My name is Stephen Rousseau, my friends call me Stever. I am excited to share my thoughts after my initial reading of The Kybalion with the Wealth Creation Mastermind. I was introduced to this writing by the WCM and am grateful I was led to this.
In this series of blog posts, I focus on the seven principles as gleaned from my first read and multiple discussions with the WCM on the Monday Night Curriculum Calls. (Join us!) I share what I’ve discovered on the seven principles by viewing them through the filter of Four Views Of I, a book I wrote to present a dynamic introspection of self (as I explained in the first post).
This is the third post in a series of five and it talks about how everything is connected and everything that happens has a reason as is presented in The Principle of Correspondence and the Principle of Cause & Effect.
When the other parts have been posted, they will be linked here:

Find out why!
Before publishing the book Four Views of I – Instinct, Intellect, Intuition, and Intention (available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble), it was summed up in a booklet. If you’d like a glimpse of the book you may download a free PDF of the booklet.
The Principles of Correspondence and Cause & Effect (intellect – mind) principles 2&6
The Kybalion Chapters related to this section are:
Chapter 8) The Planes of Correspondence (Principle #2, the Principle of Correspondence)
Chapter 12) Causation (Principle #6, the Principle of Cause & Effect)
What is the Principle of Correspondence?
As above, so below; as below, so above. (The Kybalion, chapter 8)
As above, so below; as below, so above is chaos theory and fractals at their best, but before we get into that, let’s look at the word Correspondence. This is critical for understanding the Principle of Correspondence.
Understanding the Principle of Correspondence: what does it mean to correspond?
Correspond – agree, write, resemble
Three different words, three different meanings. The fact there are three words is in itself a lesson of correspondence, and all three meanings are essential to the Principle of Correspondence.
The first word “agree” implies two different entities viewing the same item. There must be at least two to have an agreement, or at least two things being compared. This is a glimpse into the fact “all-that-is” is in layers. We can compare the layers and see that they agree although they differ.
The second word “write” is an interesting choice. Again, two are required, one who writes the message and one who receives it. A correspondent is one who reports back to the news office. To write is to communicate. It is all about transfer and manipulation of information, or in a single word – THOUGHT.
The third word “resemble” gives a clue that the two or more “things” are duplicates of each other. Something about them is the same.
Other words we can use to describe Correspondence are:
Alignment – Communication – Replication
These are all transformation words. Time transformation happens in two directions.
• Simplicity -> Complexity
• Complexity -> Simplicity
Time is unidirectional, we can only move in one direction. Time is also transcendental in that we can look back (in memory). Hindsight is 20/20 and by looking back we can reduce complexity.
• The Stupid never learn from their mistakes
• The Smart always learn from their mistakes
• The Wise learn from the mistakes of others
(I sure hope this will all make more sense when we get to the last post of this series.) Remember, learning is built precept upon precept, line upon line, here a little, there a little.
Isaiah 28:10 as an example of the Principle of Correspondence
In the previous paragraph I ended with what I remember from Bible Studies in the past. The quote is from Isaiah 28:10 “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little”
(A precept is a general rule intended to regulate behavior or thought. ISV says “Do this, do that” instead of “Precept upon precept”) I decided to look up the bible reference to make sure I had the right verse. I usually go straight to the International Standard Version (ISV) on BibleGateway.com since this is my favorite translation and did so this time.
I was not sure it said exactly what I intended, so I decided to switch to King James Version (KJV) , since I knew that was likely where it came from.
That was it, although this version repeated the word “precept” more often than I remembered. I opened the reference up to show more of the supporting verses, choosing to expand the view to verses 9-13. Seeing it in context, I decided to search a bit more. I went back to the ISV to see it in context.
I mistakenly clicked on a version I had never seen before, the Easy To Read Version (ERV) . This had some strange, non-sensical words which really baffled me.
I switched over to the Living Bible (TLB) , a paraphrased version which was the first bible I ever owned, to see if it clarified things for me.
I switched between the versions to get a fuller grasp of the meaning, a meaning which transcends them all individually. It was very enlightening.
How does this relate to the Principle of Correspondence?
I had just seen the same set of verses from four different points of view (POV). They are all the same passage in the Bible yet are different (and the same), perhaps even four layers of meaning. They are all correlated and say the same thing a bit differently. I had always missed the sarcastic tone of verse 10. The multi-faceted meaning of the verses gives a glimpse into the Law of Correspondence.
I invite you to check the passages yourself, as a case study on the Principle of Correspondence:
Another Facet of the Principle of Correspondence: repetition is the key to retention
Retention feeds duplication and growth through fractal replication. Let’s take the popular onion model. If you peel away the first few layers, you will get to the ‘meat’. Once there, you can continue to peel the layers away, you will find each layer tastes just like the last. You may notice the flavor improves as you peel into the younger bits, but they are essentially the same. The DNA of the plant contains the information needed to replicate the next layer and continues to do so as the onion root grows. As each subsequent layer grows, the next one grows to become just like it. Just like the onion, the first few layers of the universe seem inedible. These layers protect the underlying ones. The skin isn’t dead, it keeps growing to cover the ever-expanding bulb.
The oscillation of the universe manifested in Vibration and Rhythm are constant reminders of The ALL taking an active role in constantly creating All. It is All present, a gift.
Don’t miss the forest for the trees
To get a deeper look at the Principle of Correspondence, let’s once again look at the word Correspondence, there are two different uses of this word:
• a close similarity, connection, or equivalence.
• communication by exchanging letters with someone.
It seems the first choice is the best to go with if we want a deeper understanding of the Principle of Correspondence, and so…
Key to the Principle of Correspondence: Fractals.
In mathematics, a fractal is a detailed, recursive, and infinitely self-similar mathematical set whose Hausdorff* dimension strictly exceeds its topological dimension.
(*Hausdorff spaces are named after Felix Hausdorff, one of the founders of topology. If you have a lot of time on your hands, look him up. Otherwise, just accept that it is a big deal.)
Fractals are apparent in nature, and illustrate the Principle of Correspondence axiom As above, so below; as below, so above brilliantly. There is no room to expand on that here, but it is a study worth pursuing if you want a fuller picture of the Principle of Correspondence.
In Chaos Theory we find structure in apparent chaos. There is no true randomness, only higher complexity. If you go far out into the cosmos, you will see the structure of outer-space is quite similar to the structure of inner-space at the quantum level. Everything is made up of smaller things, so anywhere you grab your data, you will have a partial view of the complete whole. Every person is a microcosm of THE ALL, or it could be said, is in the image of.
Of course, we should not ignore the second use of the word correspondence. This use, too, is critical to understanding the Principle of Correspondence. The fact is, the universe is communicating to us at all levels using the same language. I find this intriguing. As we move up in vibration, the language becomes clearer. Mathematics is that language.
What is the Principle of Cause & Effect?
Every cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause; everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a name for Law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the Law. (The Kybalion, Chapter 12)
The Principle of Cause & Effect is a natural complement to the Principle of Correspondence.
The basic understanding is that everything that happens has a cause or initiator. Nothing happens without something causing it to happen. It’s THE LAW!
Some say everything happens for a reason. This is simply another way to express the Principle of Cause & Effect.
The essence of the Principle of Cause & Effect: everything is connected
This means that everything is affected by everything else. As scientists discover more about Quantum Theory and the shenanigans at the sub-atomic level, we learn about entanglement of all particles. If we take it all the way down to the interface between energy and matter, we land at the photon – not quite energy – not quite matter. It is a wavicle. Talk about tripping the Light Keep Fantastic!
Keep in mind that everything you do effects everything else, in accordance with the Principle of Cause & Effect.
An Aspect of the Principle of Cause & Effect: no chance!
Games of chance really aren’t. Odds are ALWAYS in favor of the house, that is why casinos stay open and get all your money. If they discover you are winning too much, they assume you have found a system they don’t know about and will ban you from playing. Chance is just a word we use when we don’t know the law that is at work. Even Insurance companies know this and won’t pay for “acts of God” because they are unpredictable.
Knowing the laws gives insight into which do what so that one can choose to assure an outcome. This is an increasingly complex universe, so it is impossible to know all the laws at work. The laws are all interrelated and affect each other, and are living and active, adjusting to the latest rules. As such, the Principle of Cause & Effect is always in effect (pardon the pun).
An Aspect of the Principle of Cause & Effect: you cannot break the Law.
Nobody can break the law. Anyone who tries will be broken. An example, the Law of Gravity. If you step to the edge of a cliff and jump off, you will plummet. On earth the ground will attract you at 32 feet per second per second. You will continue to accelerate until another Law is in effect to stop your falling, often it is the Law that two solids cannot occupy the same space at the same time. The ground was there first. (It’s not the fall that kills you, it is that sudden stop at the end!) Of course, if you happen to have a parachute or wings, the Law of Aerodynamics will compensate and override the Law of Gravity. These physical laws can be used to override one another, but the physical laws cannot be broken, just like the laws of the universe cannot be broken.
The LAW and THE ALL
Every law, including the Principle of Correspondence and the Principle of Cause & Effect, comes from the One Source of the All. We will learn more about this in a future post, but suffice it to say, there are layers of laws which all correspond at all levels. Higher level laws override lower level laws. “God does not play dice!” is what Albert Einstein said as Quantum Physics began to unfold. This insight about quantum mechanics is the same as saying there is no chance… only complication and misunderstanding. THE ALL knows ALL!
Here’s a quick overview of the 7 Laws (or Principles) as laid out in The Kybalion:
• Principle of Mentalism
• Principle of Correlation
• Principle of Vibration
• Principle of Polarity
• Principle of Rhythm
• Principle of Cause & Effect
• Principle of Gender (masculine vs feminine energy)
How do you use the Principles of Correspondence and Cause & Effect?
You are bound to the laws at the level you are at. But you may mentally rise above the rest on your plane. You have a choice to be a pawn in the game of life, or a player. Choose to live your destiny or succumb to fate. The first step is to know and understand the laws. Actively participate in life or go along for the ride.
Always remember, even a dead fish can swim downstream. To reach the spawning grounds of new life, you must swim against the flow.

This concludes our second view of the Seven Principles of The Kybalion. We are done looking at the second side of our tetrahedron for now. The first view displayed the Vibration and Rhythm of everything. Knowing this underlying Body of everything is one integrated facet supports the Mind of everything through correlation and every Cause and Effect provides another facet of understanding. Next post we will turn to another view, the Soul of everything as displayed in Polarity and Gender of the universe.
